Easy Steps to Getting Started....

1. Decide on a name:  In Memory of... In Honour of... your church name, etc.

Example: “You are Special!” In Memory of...

2. Line up volunteers to help bake cakes. These volunteers can go with you and present their cake to the birthday recipient. Their children can make or sign the card.

3. Call children’s homes, shelters, crisis centers, or care centers to find an organization that would like to receive the cakes. Before each new month begins, you will need to call and get the name and day of all those celebrating a birthday that month. Be sure to find out the age.

4. Call a grocery store and/or donut shop to find someone to see if they can and/or will donate cake containers. Containers can also be purchased at any supermarket with a bakery department.

5. If desired, you may also open a bank account (one that offers no service charge) to keep separate track of your group’s expenses.

6. My personal preference is not to stay long when presenting the individual with the cake (approximately 5 to 10 minutes, but there is no right or wrong way to do it).

7. Always remember to write a thank you note/card for donations received. The donations are not tax deductible unless you apply for tax-exempt status (The fee for this is $150). You can find out more at your local library. Obtaining tax exempt status is not really all that important because most donors are more concerned with helping other rather than taxes. (See this page for sample "Thank You" cards and notes.)

8. Always give the "You Are Special!" recipient facility the name, address, and phone number of the person who baked the cake.

9. You will need a Polaroid camera, film, and an acrylic frame (3x5, 4x6 or 5x7). Try to get someone to donate these items. With a permanent marker, write on the top of the frame “You Are Special!” And on the bottom, their name and birth date.

10. Write your local newspaper. A good write-up does a terrific job of spreading the word about your cake baking group.
